and obviously pray for the entire community. i want to go now live to oak creek where ted rowlands has been reporting since the very beginning. people have come really from all around the world to attend. walk us through the program if you will. what is happening during the memorial service? >> reporter: well, right now what you're seeing is people filing through very slowly taking their time, walking by the open caskets, each casket has with it a large photograph of each victim with the casket. the victims are also portrayed on a large screen in the gymnasium. thousands of people here, kate. it's amazing the turn out. like you mentioned there are people not only from the community here in oak creek but the greater milwaukee area but from across the united states and around the world. many people have flown in from india for this service. what has been happening is it is a two-hour period for the community to come in and take part by slowly filing by. some people are stopping and praying in the white sheets you see on the live feed in front of the caskets and near the chairs. at 11:00 local

the suspect described as a white man about 40 years old. let's talk now with cnn's ted rowlands live in wisconsin. ted, you're learning new information. what do you know? >> well, don, a couple things. first of all, we just watched a family walk out of the temple area where they have been at a bowling alley where they're talking with investigators. ey were very, very upset, very emotional. we do believe that the names are just being released now. two of the family members and two of the members of this temple that have been waiting for hours. just a very emotional scene out here right now. we also have learned from the atf that they're taking their time. they expect to be at the suspect's house for much of the evening. one of the reasons for the cautious technique that they're using going into that home is, as you might imagine, what happened in aurora. there's no reason for them to believe the home would be booby-trapped or anything like that, but they are taking their time. they're going in there very cautiously because, of course, the landscape has changed after aurora. >> all rig

she wasn't allowed to talk to anybody anymore. >> ted rowlands is "outfront" tonight. i know the fbi has also spoken to his ex-girlfriend. what have you found out about that? >> according to a source familiar with the investigation, the fbi has reached out to the girlfriend. and she's been very cooperative. but she has no idea how this could have happened. she says there was nothing in his behavior that would have led her to believe that this could have happened. so really, more questions than answers. >> out of the blue, sort of? sort of character -- >> this is an ex-girlfriend, a recent ex-girlfriend. how that tied into what he did, we don't know. but from what we learned from the fbi, she had no clue as to how this could happen. >> has there been a response from his family, his immediate family? >> there has been. i can read some of it to you. they released a statement to the milwaukee journal sentinel saying in part, while there can be no words of comfort that will make sense of what happened that day, please be aware that our thoughts and prayers go out to all the victims and th

now joins that group. ted rowlands have been getting a better understanding of who page is and what may have motivated him. >> reporter: according to investigators and witness accounts, 40-year-old wade page first opened fire in the temple parking lot where he killed two of his victims before going inside where he killed four more. >> he went into the holy room and opened fire on some individuals there, injuring multiple, mainly turbanned individuals. >> reporter: oak creek police lieutenant brian murphy was the first officer to arrive at the scene, encountering page in the parking lot. >> man with a gun. >> it was at that point that he was met by the suspect who basically ambushed him. >> reporter: lieutenant murphy was shot eight or nine times, but survived. page was shot and killed a few moments later by another officer. while investigators say it's too early to know an exact motive, we're learning more about wade page. police are investigating his apparent ties to white supremacists and the southern law of poverty center tells cnn it's been tracking page for years because he was

reports the murders are happening in certain neighborhoods on the city's south and west side. ted rowland got a look. we've gone to chicago a number of times over the last several years to report on this violence. if this violence was happening in other parts of the united states, many critics say it would be getting a lot more attention. ted rowlands went along with some chicago police officers as they patrolled the streets on a recent friday night. >> there's a couple places i want to check out. >> reporter: it's a friday night on the streets of chicago in the inglewood neighborhood. joe patterson and leo sh mittz has been cops here for 26 years. >> you go on these blocks, what you do is you scan everything. when they see you're a policeman if they're doing something wrong or got a gun, they start moving away or running. >> reporter: as we ride along, there's near constant reports of shots fired over the radio. >> -- person with a gun -- >> reporter: a call comes in that gets their attention. >> fourth and -- shots fired. that's one bloc away from the police station. >> reporter: it's a

members reopened the temple and our cnn's ted rowlands was given exclusive access inside. >> reporter: a bullet hole is still in the door of the main prayer room inside the oak creek temple. the plan is not to fix it but to keep it forever as a reminder of what happened. everything else was quickly cleaned by volunteers who showed up almost immediately after the crime scene was cleared. >> it takes a toll and you're thinking of the lives that are lost and how our temple is never going to be the same again. >> reporter: of the four people killed inside the only female victim died here near the back wall of the prayer room. the three others were all shot and killed in the room down this hall where, as you can see, the carpet has been replaced. this tiny pantry just off the kitchen area is where more than 15 women and children hid for more than two hours some of them injured, none of them knowing if the gunman would return to kill them. several of the victims' family members were there to help clean and pray. some of them joined reverend jesse jackson on the floor. >> simply put, our fam

the emergency departnt from police that you're listening to right there. ted rowlands standing by. we've had so much more information get in and those were really tenuous moments as this was all developing. ted, i understand now you have some new developments to tell us about this alleged shooter. what do you know? >> a little bit more information, don, on the shooter and gun that was used. one firearm was used in this shooting according to a special agent with the atf we just talked to about five minutes ago, a 9 millimeter semi-automatic pistol recovered at the scene. they have issued a search warrant for the home where the suspect lives. they are executing that warrant as we speak right now, looking for more weapons, going through the computer files, if there is a computer there and any other information about the suspect and what could have led to this shooting. take a listen to a portion of this interview we did with this atf agent a few minutes ago, talking about the suspect. he's a 40-year-old male. we'll try to get you that sound in a bit, don. here's basically what he told me. 40-year-

in a metal door frame. our ted rowlands got an exclusive look inside of the temple which is a bullet hole that leads into the main prayer area. members say it won't be repaired. in other areas that i have patched the walls and painted and cleaned up other damage from the shooting. and ted joins us from outside of the high school where the memorial service is being held. and the wake started a couple of hours ago, and what has happened so far? >> well, michael, it is amazing how many people have descended on this small town in wisconsin, oak creek, from around the world. a lot of people from india made the journey here, and thousands of people have gone into the gymnasium and taken their time to walk through slowly as all six of the victims are laid out in open caskets with their photos next to each casket, and there's also a video screen displaying the victims' photos, and there is a prayer area, and a sheet has been laid out in front of the seating area where people have been taking the time to pray. one poignant moment was a group of law enforcement folks from the area here came in, and

of the rampage and the acts of courage that saved lives. ted rowlands is in oak creek, wisconsin, where services are getting underway this morning. and tell us about the mood there, the focus today. >> reporter: well, deb, as you said, this is about the victims. and as you can see, the hearses, each carrying one body, there are six hearses here. they just arrived about 10 minutes ago, and they are just about to transport the bodies from the hearses inside oak creek high school. and this is where they will all be out in the gymnasium, open casket. they are expecting upwards of 2,000 people to show up here from the community to pay their respects. and it is expected to be a very solemn ceremony, as you might imagine. there will be a two-hour visitation followed by about a 45-minute program with speakers including attorney general eric holder and family members, along with governor scott walker here, wisconsin governor scott walker. but as you just look at the six vehicles there, it brings it home. the six people that lost their lives in this tragic shooting almost a week ago. it was a week ago thi

michael page. page was living in wisconsin for about a year, and as our ted rowlands found out, in the months and weeks before he killed six people, page was a recluse and making arrangements to carry out his attack. ted is live in oak creek tonight. ted, what have you been learning tonight about page's past? >> reporter: well, erin, clearly, this is someone who was shutting down, taking himself out of the day-to-day of ciety, taking himself away from friends and family. we're also learning about his past, going back almost ten years where he was gravitating towards white supremacy. in the days and weeks before the temple shooting, wade page began to withdraw from the world, starting, according to neighbors, by moving out of the upstairs apartment behind this house he shared with his girlfriend and her son. neighbors say he left with a few boxes, but didn't seem upset. >> i never did see a big break-up or anything. i rarely saw him around. >> reporter: two weeks before the shooting, page stopped showing up for his job as a machine operator at this manufacturing facility. then o

the question for state, local and federal authorities. ted rowlands has more on the investigation. what have you learned? >> the gun was purchased legally at a local shop called the shooter's shop, on july 28th. he had to wait until july 30th to pick it up. wisconsin has a two-day waiting period. there was nothing illegal about this purchase. this is a guy without a record who just bought a gun. >> the fbi is leading this investigation, where are they looking? >> they're talking to everyone who has had contact with him. we saw video of -- in north carolina where they looked at a home there, where he once stayed with a bandmate. the home had confederate flags around it, they're looking for everything. they talked to an ex-girlfriend, neighbors, we talked to some of those neighbors and trying to get a full picture who have this person is. >> you're talking about a band, this is called white power music. there have been reports about a girlfriend. was he currently seeing someone? >> what we've been able to determine is that he had just broken up with a girlfriend or she had just broken up with
